Short links and QR codes

Create a short link for a placement.

Who can do this
Owners and admins create and edit short links. Everyone else can see the list.
Where in the app
Redirects, then New short link

In short

You will have a short link on your own address that redirects to your target and counts every visit, ready to print or paste.

Steps checked

Short links are called Redirects in the menu. They live at <your-organisation>.1namecard.com/<key>.

Create the link.

  1. Step 1.

Open Redirects in the menu and press New short link.

  2. Step 2.

Under Destination, type the Key: 2 to 40 lowercase letters, digits or hyphens. The short link is /key. It cannot match a card slug.

  3. Step 3.

Type the Target address: a full address starting with https://, or a path on your site such as /your-card. A path gets ?s=<key> added, so leads from this link are attributed to it.

  4. Step 4.

Optional: open UTM builder. Fill in Source, Medium, Campaign and Content, then press Apply to target. The Source and Content boxes offer presets such as stand_qr, rollup, leaflet and badge. A blank field removes its parameter. Read from target fills the builder from an address that already has UTM values.

  5. Step 5.

Leave Status code at 307 Temporary (default). It is never cached, so you can change the target later. Use 301 or 308 only for a permanent move, because browsers remember it.

  6. Step 6.

Keep Enabled ticked. Tick Pass the query string on to add the visitor's own ?a=b parameters to the target. If both have the same parameter, the visitor's wins.

  7. Step 7.

Under Expiry and fallback, set Last day it works (inclusive, Barcelona time) and a Fallback address for disabled and expired visits, if you want them.

  8. Step 8.

Under By device, set iPhone and iPad address and Android address, for example store links. Blank sends that device to the target.

  9. Step 9.

Under Link preview, fill in Title, Description and Image address (1200 by 630) to control what WhatsApp, LinkedIn and Slack show when the link is pasted. People are still redirected as usual.

  10. Step 10.

Under Organise, add Tags (up to 10; letters, digits, hyphen or underscore) and a Note for your team.

  11. Step 11.

Press Create short link. The list shows "Short link created."

Edit, test and read results.

Press Edit on a link, change what you need and press Save changes. Changing the key breaks printed QR codes and links that use the old one, but the click history moves with it. The list shows Clicks 7d, Clicks 30d and All time. Test the link as a phone before you print it, and read results under Analytics.

Deleting a link hides it and keeps its key and history. Tick Show deleted in the filter, then restore it. Disabled links send visitors to the fallback address, else the not-found target set under Settings, else a 404.

Common messages.

  • "A short link with this key already exists" and "A card already uses this slug": choose another key.
  • "Enter a full address starting with http:// or https://, or a path such as /your-card": fix the target.
  • "Your plan allows 10 short links. Contact us to move to a bigger plan.": delete one or move up a plan.

Common questions.

Does a short link use cookies?

No. A click record holds no IP address. Unique visitors are counted with a daily-salted hash of IP address and browser. Bots, prefetchers and staff visits are left out of counts by default.

Is there a QR code for a short link?

Not yet. QR codes for short links are in development. Each card has its own branded QR code today.

Why does my card slug beat my short link?

A card slug always wins over a short link of the same name, so the app does not let you create a link with a key that a card uses.
